Canadian Government's Translation Bureau goes user-centric

Attendees at a recent TAUS Executive Forum got a sneak preview from Gilles Martel of the new vision for online translation services currently in the works for the Canadian Government. The blueprint centers around a fully-integrated infrastructure platform that will provide a palette of “pull” services for different kinds of users. Over the next two years, this will lead to far-reaching changes in translator careers, the introduction of statistical MT, post-editing capabilities, an upgraded version of Termium, and other repository-driven services based on a 300 million word bilingual corpus. Raising the SMT profile in Europe

Interview with Philipp Koehn

Statistical machine translation (SMT) researchers in Europe will be having a field day in May, with the 2nd Machine Translation Marathon in Berlin lasting ten whole days (May 10 to 20). The event is being organized by EuroMatrix, a public-funded research network project devoted to multiplying SMT development and evaluation for various pairs of European languages. At the end of the event, an invitation-only 2-day Translingual Europe conference is due to inform industry and commerce among other audiences about the "opportunities and challenges" for EU research in MT.

Masterminding the Marathon is Philipp Koehn, a machine translation researcher at the University of Edinburgh and also Chief Scientist with Asia Online. (See story on Asia Online). TAUS recently talked to Dr. Koehn about his work.

Join the TAUS Data Association

Countdown for Founding Members: 53 days.

The TAUS Data Association will be incorporated on June 30. The main objectives are:

  1. Establish a secure and legitimate platform for storing, sharing and leveraging language data.
  2. Access to large volumes of trusted language data for increased translation efficiency and quality.
  3. Industry collaboration to harmonize multilingual terminology.

Welcome to TAUS

The Translation Automation User Society (TAUS) is a community of users and providers of translation technologies and services. The ambition of the TAUS community is to translate a manifold of content in an increasing number of languages through technology adoption, service innovation and cross-industry collaboration.

TAUS focuses on the whole spectrum of authoring, translation and globalization processes and technologies. Simply by enabling organizations to share relevant information, identify good practices, find technologies and experts, benchmark processes and leverage their buying influence, TAUS helps companies to save management time, avoid the risk of mistaken decisions, and save money. And by exchanging experiences and insights, TAUS members cut back dramatically on the learning and implementation costs of new translation technologies.

Change leaders

The translation industry has always been a fragmented market place. The culture of creativity and craftsmanship has hindered it from adopting technology at the same pace as other industries. The rapidly changing landscape requires new thinking. In its current state the language and translation industry is incapable of meeting the requirements for local language support in an open, global society. It could quadruple in size if we can speed up translation time, process more volume and handle more languages.

By working together the TAUS Community explores new skill sets, new platforms, new working methods and new roles for the players in the global translation market. TAUS is driving forward the agenda of change for its community members, stimulating innovation, automation and collaboration. Our mission is to increase the size and the significance of the translation industry, helping the world to communicate better.
