A mechanical engineer at a quality assurance department in the early 1990s, Manuel Herranz is a double graduate from Manchester University and combined both fields to start a career as a language consultant for engineering firms. This period included spells as a voice-over artist, freelancer for the BBC and Granada TV, and as an engineering trainer at Ford's Valencia plant, Giddings & Lewis/ThyssenKrupp in Liverpool and Rolls Royce Industrial and Marine in Spain and Argentina. An associate of the B.I Corporation Japan since 1997 and partner at the European subsidiary B.I Europe since 2000, Manuel re-vamped the European brand in 2005 as Pangeanic, a language service provider specializing in large multilingual localization and publishing with a specialism in the electronics, technical and engineering industries. A firm believer in language automation, Manuel directed ISO qualification and rule-based machine translation implementation for patent work. Since 2007, he has directed research and development for customized statistical machine translation deployments. Now fully committed to the spin-off Pangea.com.MT, Manuel has been an active founding member of TAUS and TDA initiative by providing millions of words after agreement with some of its clients, proving that LSPs can play a key role in data sharing if they truly believe they can benefit from automation. Pangeanic has also provided training sets of its automotive SMT engines. TDA has been instrumental for the development of many of Pangeanic MT developments, proving that sharing data can not only benefit donors but also vendors to provide better and more sophisticated solutions, open standard implementations (TMX, XLIFF) and hybrids operating worldwide from the Spanish headquarters.
